Why a goldendoodle?
Aside from “it’s so fluffy” overload, there are several reasons you may want a goldendoodle. Perhaps the most common one is its short, curly coat, a poodle characteristic that often carries over.
Because they tend to shed less than dogs with fur, you’re less likely to have a strong allergic reaction to a goldendoodle. However, some do have fur similar to a golden retriever and will shed as such.
Regardless of type, to help keep your pup’s coat healthy and the dander down, you’ll need to brush it regularly — at least every other day. Also, take it to the groomer for a proper trim every 2-3 months.

Are goldendoodles healthy?
Much like the people who love them, all dogs have the potential for health problems. As a mixed breed, the goldendoodle could have issues that either of its parents have. Generally, though, experts suggest many of the potential health problems seem to be diminished rather than magnified in this canine.
Be sure to choose a reputable breeder, which should help reduce your pet’s chances of poor health. Still, your pooch may be predisposed to some of its parents' most common problems, such as heart and orthopedic conditions. Be sure to take your pet to a veterinarian at least once per year for a checkup. A healthy goldendoodle usually lives 10-15 years.
Are goldendoodles smart?
When people talk about dog intelligence, they’re usually referring to three factors: instinct, adaptability and obedience. Based on that, neuropsychologist Stanley Coren ranks both poodles and golden retrievers in the top five of the most intelligent dog breeds.
So it’s safe to say, goldendoodles are pretty smart, too. That means you’ll likely be able to train your dog to play fetch, do some tricks and obey commands. With great intelligence comes extra responsibility for the dog owner.
Goldendoodles have tons of energy, especially in their teen years. To keep them out of trouble, you’ll need to keep your pooch mentally and physically stimulated; experts suggest at least two hours of playtime per day. Regular walks are important, of course. But your little dood will thrive even more with interactive puzzles and toys, as well as obedience training.

Are goldendoodles friendly?
It’s hard to find a more social bowwow than a goldendoodle. In fact, if you’re looking for a guard dog, this definitely isn’t the one for you. This hybrid is known for getting along well with just about anyone, from young kids to other pets.
This also means they don’t like to be left alone. If you’re away at work all day, they could become destructive to get attention — chewed shoes, couches, lampshades. They’re happiest when they receive loads of positive attention.
How big do goldendoodles grow?
Asking the breeder is the easiest way to determine your dog’s future size, because it will depend on its parents. There are four basic size categories:
- Standard: 50-90 pounds, 21-25 inches tall
- Medium: 35-55 pounds, 18-21 inches
- Mini: 20-40 pounds, 16-20 inches
- Toy: 10-24 pounds, 10-14 inches
Dogs grow quickly during those first months (darn it!), and are usually fully grown by the time they are 1-year-old. They will continue gaining weight for another year or two.

Consider your living space when picking your pup.
What size is best?
Goldendoodles tend to be adaptable, but you should factor in your living situation when deciding which one would be most suitable. Consider the size of your living space, available outdoor space and your activity level. For example, a small apartment would be more suited for a toy goldendoodle, whereas a large home and lot could easily accommodate a standard one.
