  • Before the word "Jazz" appeared in a title of a silent film it first appeared in the images. The earliest appearance of a jazz-related word that I've come across is in a still from a lost "split-reel" (meaning it was seven or eight minutes long) comedy of 1914 made by the Lubin company called Good Cider. Oliver Hardy appeared in a supporting role in the first year of his film career. This was roughly twelve years before he and Stan Laurel were teamed.

On Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, he looks forward to the time when Jakie will take his place in the temple, but his loving wife Sara is concerned that their son wants to do something else. Meanwhile, Jakie is seen singing in a saloon by neighborhood kibbutzer Moishe Yudelson, who then rushes to inform the cantor. Jakie is then dragged home and given a whipping by his father. Later, Jakie tells his heart-broken mother that he is going to be on the stage, then runs away. Years later, in San Francisco, Jakie has become a singer performing at Coffee Dan's restaurant. When he sings the poignant song "Dirty Hands, Dirty Face" for the audience, followed by the jazz tune "Toot, Toot, Tootsie," vaudeville dancer Mary Dale, who is in the audience, is intrigued. • 1927 can best be remembered as The Year of Sound Film. With the launch of the Movietone Newsreels and the sensation of Charles Lindbergh’s flight across the Atlantic in sound, the race to make a feature length sound film was on. In September, Fox Film Corporation debuted its first synchronized feature length film, Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans. Though popular with critics, it was quickly eclipsed in popularity a few weeks later by Warner Brothers’ The Jazz Singer. While neither film was the first to introduce audiences to sound, or even spoken dialogue in film, their popularity with critics and movie goers signaled the end of the Golden Era of Sound Film and the rise of Talking Pictures.
