Before the word "Jazz" appeared in a title of a silent film it first appeared in the images. The earliest appearance of a jazz-related word that I've come across is in a still from a lost "split-reel" (meaning it was seven or eight minutes long) comedy of 1914 made by the Lubin company called Good Cider. Oliver Hardy appeared in a supporting role in the first year of his film career. This was roughly twelve years before he and Stan Laurel were teamed.

In New York City, at the turn of the century, Cantor Rabinowitz is determined that his thirteen-year-old son Jakie become the next in a long family line of cantors. 1927 can best be remembered as The Year of Sound Film. With the launch of the Movietone Newsreels and the sensation of Charles Lindbergh’s flight across the Atlantic in sound, the race to make a feature length sound film was on. In September, Fox Film Corporation debuted its first synchronized feature length film, Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans. Though popular with critics, it was quickly eclipsed in popularity a few weeks later by Warner Brothers’ The Jazz Singer. While neither film was the first to introduce audiences to sound, or even spoken dialogue in film, their popularity with critics and movie goers signaled the end of the Golden Era of Sound Film and the rise of Talking Pictures.
